JATA’s Ongoing Commitment to Safe, Reliable Transit

August 6, 2025 – Jackson, MI
The Jackson Area Transportation Authority (JATA) remains committed to providing safe, affordable, and dependable public transportation to the residents of Jackson and surrounding townships. We want to thank our riders and community partners for their patience and continued support as we navigate recent service disruptions caused by a combination of staffing shortages and mechanical challenges.

What’s Been Happening?

Over the past few months, like many transportation agencies nationwide, JATA has faced:

  • Temporary driver shortages due to qualified applicants and unexpected absences.
  • Longer wait times on some routes, especially during midday and late afternoon hours.
  • Maintenance delays caused by aging buses, staff shortage, and nationwide supply chain issues.

Despite these challenges, we’ve continued to prioritize core routes and provide regular updates through our social media channels and at the Transfer Center.

What We’re Doing to Improve:

We are taking immediate and long-term steps to strengthen our services:

1. Hiring & Training More Drivers
We’re actively recruiting new drivers and streamlining our training process to ensure safe and timely service across all routes.

2. Improving Fleet Reliability
We’ve pulled older buses from service for inspection and repair and are pursuing federal and state funding to invest in newer, safer vehicles.

3. Enhancing Rider Communication
Service updates are shared regularly on our Facebook page, and we’re expanding tools like the TripSpark MyRide app to give real-time updates to riders.

4. Strengthening Community Partnerships
We’re working closely with state agencies, vendors, and local organizations to meet current needs and plan for the future.

What You Can Do:

Thank You for Your Patience

JATA is proud to serve the Jackson community, and we’re working every day to return to full, consistent operations. Your understanding and continued support mean everything to our drivers, mechanics, and staff.

We’ll keep you informed and involved as we move forward, together.
